BSS - Hydrogel Bulkhead Shaft Seal

Midé Technology Corporation is developing a novel and innovative hydrogel bulkhead shaft seal, under a United States Navy Small Business Innovative Research Phase I contract. The seal incorporates Smart Gels that are also used in our SmartSkin project - pdf. The purpose of a bulkhead seal is to prevent flooding between compartments along the main propulsion shafting. This new seal was tested in a 1/8th scale test setup and extensive tests concluded that the seal satisfies all DDG (Guided Missile Destroyer) requirements. The current shipbuilder specifications require that the bulkhead shaft seal must be self-activating with a maximum leakage rate of 0.5 pt/hr (1pt/min for DDG).
