Seal Test Facility

The leak test facility simulates the environment of bulkhead shaft seals aboard ships. The facility can accommodate bulkhead mounting holes up to 50 inches in diameter. Mounting hardware must be designed a fabricated for each shaft diameter. The facility employs a stub shaft that is driven by an electric motor.

The stub shaft is contained in a sealed test chamber that can be partially or fully flooded to simulate compartment flooding scenarios or can be pressurized with gasses to simulate compartment HVAC differentials or firefighting scenarios (halon) across bulkheads. A typical test profile involves both spinning and static shaft conditions, as well as wet and dry conditions. The test facility can currently accomodate shaft RPMs of greater than 1450 RPM. The test chamber can be pressurized to simulate depth conditions pertinent to the seal.

The test facility is controlled by custom Labview® software. The custom test profile and data collection are automated. The test facility can notify test personnel of out of ordinary test conditions via text message.
