Specifications
QuickPack IDE Actuators represent a revolutionary new type of device: a surface-bonded actuator that works like a stack. Unlike traditional strain actuators that operate on the indirect piezoelectric 3-1 effect, QuickPack IDE Actuators operate on the stronger direct 3-3 effect, providing greater coupling efficiency and more output. QuickPack IDE Actuators operate directionally, providing the capability to control torsional motion in structures. Also, QuickPack IDE actuators have significantly higher electromechanical coupling than traditional piezoelectric strain actuators, giving them higher output for a given applied field. And like all QuickPack actuators, QuickPack IDE actuators encapsulate fragile piezoelectric elements in a protective skin with pre-attached electrical leads, making them easy to work with.
Principle of Operation
Traditional 3-1 strain actuators have piezoceramic elements with electrodes on the top and bottom surfaces and are poled through the thickness. They expand and contract in plane, perpendicular to applied field, through the less dramatic piezoelectric 3-1 effect. In contrast, QuickPack IDE Actuators have a special interdigital electrode pattern, allowing the piezo element to be poled along its length. Because of this difference, QuickPack IDE Actuators exhibit piezoelectric properties that are over 50% higher than previously possible.
